Jerusalem history is rich, complex, and unique, and because of it, the city draws in thousands of visitors. See these modern attractions to explore their pasts.
Jerusalem has played an integral part in world, cultural, and religious history. Some of the world’s largest religions claim holy sites here and throughout Israel, and the city itself dates back centuries. Today, it is a modern, bustling city with new housing developments and shopping malls. Despite the city’s new veneer, many of its sites and attractions are modern places with an interesting and unique past. They are integrated in daily life in the Holy Land, but their origins lie in ancient times.
Old City
Old City, which dates back to the Ottoman Empire, is one of Jerusalem’s three contemporary neighborhoods, as well as the city’s location during ancient civilizations. Its original walls, which were built to protect the city, still stand. While you’re here, spend some time wandering the stalls of the Machane Yehuda, the street market that locals refer to simply as “The Market.” It has stood in virtually the same place since Ottoman rule, and it is an excellent place to find traditional clothing and food items.
The Mount of Olives
The Mount of Olives, which overlooks Jerusalem, is another modern place with a past. It has served as a burial ground since 3000 BC and is the site of many Jewish burials. The necropolis, in what is now the modern town of Silwan, was the resting place of Jerusalem’s most important citizens during Biblical times. In the Christian religion, the Mount of Olives is believed to be the location from which Jesus ascended to Heaven. Today, the Mount is part of East Jerusalem and is the site of an Arab neighborhood, as well as numerous churches and tombs. The Mount of Olives is a great place to visit and tour for modern wonders and rich history.
Area G
While you’re in the area, be sure to explore Area G, an archaeological dig in Silwan. It is a very cool open-air dig that has uncovered bits and pieces of the City of David, and archaeologists have uncovered a treasure trove of artifacts here. Scientists have done an excellent job preserving and documenting them, which is useful for curious tourists. If you can, try to come here during the spring or summer, as that is when you will find the most activity.
The Western Wall
The Western Wall, often called the Wailing Wall, is another modern monument that has stood the test of time. It is one of the most sacred sights in Judaic history, and Jewish people make pilgrimages from all over the world here to pray. It has become a popular tourist destination, regardless of the visitor’s religious affiliation. With the opening of the Wailing Wall’s tunnel system to the public and new private tours, the Western Wall has survived and thrived as an ancient relic with contemporary significance and relevance.
Jerusalem’s history is fascinating, and many of its modern sights have storied pasts. So make sure to explore the various areas and attractions to delve into Jerusalem history.
