Winery Tours from Jerusalem
Jan 15 , 2011
Take a break and relax during your trip. Embark on one of the many winery tours from Jerusalem, and sit back and sip on some delicious wines.
While there are many top-notch museums, restaurants, and other cultural attractions within the city limits, sometimes it can be nice to get out and explore other locations in Israel. As the European influence has crept in, thanks to Israel's position on the Mediterranean Sea, an interesting cultural phenomenon has popped up: wineries. The wineries house delicious and interesting wines and are only a short drive away from the city. So, if you’re a wine connoisseur or you simply want to venture outside of the city, embark on a winery tour from Jerusalem.
Local Wineries
Over the last decade or so, more than 300 small wineries have cropped up in the Galilee and northern regions of Israel. Conveniently for visitors to Jerusalem, the nearby Hevron Mountain region is also home to the largest collection of closely concentrated wineries. Because of this, visitors can take a drive to explore their grounds and taste some fantastic kosher wines. You may rent a car and drive to wineries yourself or you can book a reservation on one of the many winery tours from Jerusalem.
Ella Valley
One of the best spots to start your tour is Ella Valley at the Ella Valley Winery. This winery produces a wide variety of red wines, as well as top quality olive oils. Bring a picnic or a collection of cheeses, as there are many outdoor tables.
The Latrun Monastery
Nearby, the Latrun Monastery makes another great stop. Founded by Trappist monks more than a century ago, here you'll find a garden, vineyard, and orchards for exploring. You can buy vineyard-produced wine at the entrance, as well as others foods produced in the monastery.
The Tzora Winery
In the mountains between Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem, you'll find the Tzora Winery. It has developed a following for its white wines, particularly its chardonnays. They'll happily arrange a private tour if you call ahead, and there is a store where you can buy cheese and the winery's spirits on the premises.
Wineries closer to Jerusalem
For less driving, the road between Jerusalem and Ramat Raziel offers several vineyards worth seeing. The Tzuba, Castel, and Seahorse Winery and Vineyards all offer delicious wine selections, and the Seahorse Winery is notable for its use of organically grown grapes. The Castel Winery is likely the most well known in the area, as its products have developed a following worldwide.
With hundreds of wineries near the city, visitors can take a break from the hustle and bustle of vacationing in Jerusalem and enjoy some down time watching the sun set and sipping on some wine.
